State cross country region meet roundup

The MPSSAA's region meets for cross country took place at the end of last week, and a number of local runners and teams fared well.

There are four meets in each of the four classes. The size of those meets vary greatly depending upon the number of schools and teams in the area.

Class 4A had some of the better meets. In the North region, Howard's Gabby Rayner won her meet while No. 2 Dulaney took the team title for girls. Eric Walz of Dulaney won on the boys' side as the Lions completed their sweep of the team titles.

Maria Coffin of Annapolis took the East Region title as No. 7 Broadneck won the team crown. For the boys, top-ranked Severna Park nearly posted a perfect score (16), and Andrew Forsyth of the Falcons won the race.

In Class 3A, Westminster's Colleen Kernan won the North Region, and Nick Fransham of North Harford took the boys' race. The No. 5 Towson girls won their title while the Generals also grabbed first in the boys division.

River Hill also posted a sweep. The girls and boys -- both ranked No. 3 -- won the East Region titles. Centennial's Shreya Nalubola and Chris Heydrick of River HIll won the individual championships.

Hereford swept in the Class 2A North Region. The No. 9 boys, led by winner Russell Carter, triumphed while the girls easily won. Lansdowne's Julia Corns won the girls' race.

Liberty's Chad Sussman took first in the Class 2A West as his Lions finished second overall.

The Oakland Mills boys won the Class 2A South team title. Pikesville swept the Class 1A North titles. Emily Glossinger led the Panthers girls with her victory.

Northwestern captured the Class 1A South title, led by victorious Natalie-Rae Jefferson. NAF won the boys' title, and Malik Jackson (first) was the key in that race.
