Ryan Ripken reaches his own milestone

Scoring 22 points in a win Friday against Archbishop Curley, Gilman senior forward Ryan Ripken surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his four-year career.

While the two-year captain has been putting up consistent numbers, he's also bringing plenty of valuable intangibles that have helped the Greyhounds to a 4-1 start.

In wins against Severn, then-No. 14 Calvert Hall and Curley, the 6-foot-6 son of Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. averaged 17.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals.

Wednesday's 77-68 win over Calvert Hall was only the second time in 50 years that the Greyhounds defeated the Cardinals. Gilman entered the week with a 3-0 mark in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.

In November, Ripken, a first baseman/pitcher on the diamond, committed to play baseball at South Carolina.
