Roundup (April 11): St. Paul's uses late run to top Comets in girls lacrosse, 14-12

St. Paul's School for Girls saved its best lacrosse for last against host Catonsville on Saturday.

The Gators scored four unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes to rally past the Comets for a 14-12 victory. Senior attacker Sara Moeller and junior midfielder Liza Liotta each finished with a hat trick.
The win provided St. Paul's with a boost after . The Gators were coming off a 15-11 loss to McDonogh in which the Gators trailed by only one a goal late to a team that has now won 123 consecutive games.
"It was really important to bounce back after the tough loss to McDonogh," St. Paul's coach Ali Jacobs said. "We made the plays that we needed to when it really counted. We had a couple of clutch stops on defense and a couple of clutch goals."
St. Paul's The Gators came alive late with a 4-0 run against Catonsville, which received three-goal performances from Lauren McDonald and Kelsey Scott.
Catonsville The Comets (4-3) went ahead 12-10 with 9:39 remaining when McDonald, a senior attacker, picked up a loose ball and beat goalie Klia Trintis (five saves) for her second straight goal.
But over the next 1:36, St. Paul's the Gators received back-to-back goals from Moeller and Ashly McGovern to tie it at 12-12.
Paige Aldave gave the Gators their first lead, 13-12, with 6:49 remaining, scoring on a feed from Moeller.


BASEBALL
No. 6 Mount Saint Joseph 3, No. 2 Archbishop Spalding 2: Tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning tied 2-all, Andre Brown hit a line drive off the "Purple Monster" in left field to bring home Tim McManus a run as the host Gaels (10-3, 5-2 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) beat the Cavaliers (9-4, 2-4).
Spalding scored runs in the first two innings to reach a two-run lead that they held would hold until the bottom of the sixth.
Andre Brown reached base starting the sixth on an error. C J Palting followed with a walk. Max Rogers bunted the runners over to second and third. Andre Brown scored on a wild pitch and C J Palting moved up to third. He scored on a ground out to short by Ed Nottingham.
Matt Chism replaced Rogers in the top of the seventh and retired the Spalding hitters in order. Wiith one out in the seventh Tim McManus reached on ground ball to the infield. In an effort to pick McManus off of first base an errant throw allowed McManus to reach second. The throw to second was offline an allowed him to reach third. Spalding used a five man infield alignment against the next hitter and he was retired on a pop up to short. Clark Clatchey was intentionally walked to put runners on first and third. Andre Brown hit a line drive off the "Purple Monster" in left field to drive in Tim McManus with the winning run.

No. 3 Reservoir 2, Glenelg Gleneleg 1: The host Gators (5-1) scored twice in the seventh inning to beat the Gladiators (5-3). Jack Barry worked two innings of relief for the win.


No. 5 Arundel 9, Old Mill 8, 8 innings: Chris Ford's two-out, two-strike single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Brady Ward for the winning run as the Wildcats (8-1) beat the Patriots (6-3).
The win was the third straight in extra innings.
Arundel (8-1) scored a run in the sixth inning to tie Southern and won in nine innings on Tuesday, then scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to tie Severna Park before eventually winning in eight on Thursday.
The Wildcats committed five errors in the first four innings that led to two runs in each frame and an 8-5 lead for the Patriots. The Wildcats fought back to tie in the fifth with three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. Arundel's Brad Hagemann pitched the final three innings to earn the win.

SOFTBALL
No. 2 Northeast 21, Glen Burnie 3: Jenna Matulonis worked five innings for the win and hit three doubles for the visiting Eagles (4-2).

FRIDAY'S BOYS LACROSSE
No. 5 St. Mary's 12, No. 6 Calvert Hall 7: The Saints (5-3, 2-0 MIAA A¿Conference) used put together a 5-1 third-quarter run to beat the host Cardinals (8-2, 1-1).
Timmy Hardy had a hat trick for St. Mary's, which won both league games last this week. No. 4 Loyola Blakefield was the only other ranked league team to win two. Calvert Hall, No. 1 McDonogh, No. 2 Boys' Latin and No. 3 St. Paul's all went 1-1 in league play last this week. No. 7 Gilman lost both of its league games.
