At 16-0, Oldfields' girls lacrosse team already is assured of finishing with the best record in school history, but the players want to make it perfect Sunday with an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference championship.
Oldfields will play Indian Creek (13-2) for the title Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stevenson University. In their first meeting on April 1, Oldfields won 14-10.
A small all-girls boarding school in Sparks in northern Baltimore County, Oldfields also has a large number of day students and 12 of the varsity lacrosse players are from Baltimore.
Leading the way is McDaniel-bound senior Emily Brownawell, who set a school career scoring record with 312 goals. Junior goalkeeper Camille Keyes has 164 saves in her first season.
From a strong sophomore class, Grace Pollak has 68 goals and 19 assists while Mikaela Hensen has 37 goals and 19 assists. Senior Anastasia Araviakis has 37 goals and 25 assists.
"We continue to raise the bar for ourselves after every opponent we face and believe that each game we play is our biggest challenge," coach Kelsie Tomlinson said in a news release.
"We have seven spectacular seniors, but the talent runs deep on this team. Three of our starters had never picked up a lacrosse stick before this season, and it has been incredible to see the veterans embrace them and teach them everything they know."
This isn't the first time Oldfields has been successful on the lacrosse field. It won back-to-back C Conference titles in 2001 and 2002. In 1993, it finished 11-2 and won the B Conference title in the Association of Independent Schools, the private school girls conference before it merged with the Catholic League to form the IAAM in 2000.
