Mount Hebron earned the top seed in the girls lacrosse Class 3A-2A South super section that includes programs with 29 previous state championships when the MPSSAA draw for the state championship bracket was held Monday.
The Vikings, aiming to add another title to their state-record 15 state championships, will have a bye in the first round and meet the winner of Wednesday's game between Century and Centennial in the 3A-2A Section I semifinals Friday.
Defending state champion Marriotts Ridge, which has won two of the last three Class 3A-2A titles, is the No. 2 seed in Section I and will also have a bye. The Mustangs will meet the winner of Wednesday's game between Glenelg and last year's 2A-1A state champ Winters Mill in Friday's semfinal.
The Vikings (13-1) are ranked No. 2 in The Baltimore Sun's Top 15 poll behind the only team they lost to this season, No. 1 McDonogh (18-0). The Mustangs (12-2) have lost only to those two and are the second-highest ranked public school team at No. 4 behind Mount Hebron.
No. 13 Century (10-4), which lost to Marriotts Ridge in last year's state final, also lost to McDonogh this spring but the Knights' other three losses -- to No. 11 Manchester Valley, No. 12 C. Milton Wright and Frederick County's top team, Oakdale -- were by one goal each. The Knights have won six state titles, most recently in 2012.
Glenelg (10-3) has suffered its losses by a total of five goals. The Gladiators, who won the last of their two titles in 2008, fell to Mount Hebron, 10-8, early in the season and to Marriotts Ridge, 7-6, last week.
Five-time state champ Winters Mill has struggled this season at 4-8 while Centennial, the only team in the field without a state title, is 7-4.
The teams in this section have won all but two of the 3A-2A and 2A-1A titles for the past 10 years (Fallston won the other two). But only one will come out of the section to play for a regional title and perhaps the state championship.
In the other sectional bottleneck, Class 4A-3A Section I, Severna Park earned the top seed with defending champion Broadneck second. This section also includes South River and Annapolis. Those four have combined to win 18 state titles.
Varsity Highlights
The Falcons (11-2) have a bye in the first round and Friday will host the winner of Wednesday's game between Chesapeake-AA and Arundel. Broadneck (12-2) hosts Meade in Wednesday's first round. Third-seeded South River (8-6) hosts Annapolis.
Broadneck is the only team in the section ranked in The Baltimore Sun's Top 15 at No. 10. After falling to Severna Park by one goal in the season opener, the Bruins won the April 11 rematch 15-8. They also beat South River twice.
Those aren't the only brackets with an interesting potential matchup. Hereford (14-0), The Sun's No. 10 team and the only undefeated public school team from the area, is seeded first in Class 3A-2A North, Section I. Towson (10-3), which the Bulls just defeated 12-8 the Baltimore County championship, is seeded second.
Other teams ranked in The Sun's Top 15 to earn top seeds: No. 11 Manchester Valley (12-1) in Class 2A-1A West, Section I and No. 14 Fallston (11-3) in 2A-1A South, Section I. No. 12 C. Milton Wright (9-4) is seeded sixth in Class 3A-2A, Section II.
