Mount Carmel boys basketball coach Tom Rose has stepped down to become the men's coach at his alma mater, Goucher College.
Rose, a 1995 Goucher grad, went 218-162 in 13 seasons at Mount Carmel, which moved up to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and joined the Baltimore Catholic League in the 2011-12 season after previously competing in the MIAA B and C leagues.
Rose guided the Cougars to a C Conference title in 2005, and B titles in 2006 and 2008. This past season, Mount Carmel (32-11) reached the MIAA A title game and the BCL semifinals and, at one point this season, reached No. 1 in The Baltimore Sun's Top 15 poll for the first time in program history. Rose was named the BCL Coach of the Year.
Last month, former Goucher coach Len Trevino stepped down after 25 seasons. Rose, who will start his tenure on Aug. 1, played for Trevino at Goucher and also was an assistant coach under him from 1995 to 2002.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity being an alum and an assistant there, so this is like a dream job for me," Rose said. "Mount Carmel gave me a great opportunity and the support I received there has really prepared me for Goucher. It's bittersweet, but I'm excited to get started at Goucher."
