McDonogh's run for its eighth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference girls lacrosse championship and its 155th straight win will have to wait a day.
With the threat of storms for Saturday afternoon, IAAM officials opted to postpone the No. 1 Eagles game against No. 4 Roland Park until 3 p.m. Sunday at Archbishop Spalding. The B Conference final between defending champion Glenelg Country and Mercy was also postponed until 1 p.m. Sunday.
The C Conference championship between last year's winner Annapolis Area Christian School and St. Timothy's was scheduled to go on as planned Saturday at 1 p.m. at Spalding because storms weren't expected until later in the day.
The postponements didn't come as a surprise to any of the teams. After McDonogh's semifinal win over Notre Dame Prep on Thursday, the Eagles players were told to "clear their dance cards" for Sunday just in case.
"It just gives us one extra day to prepare," said Eagles coach Chris Robinson. "We'll just make the best of it and go practice and do what we need to do."
The Eagles, whose 154-game winning streak is a national record for girls lacrosse, will face Roland Park (15-3) in a rematch of last year's championship game. The Reds, who've played McDonogh in three of the past five A Conference finals, led last year's title game by four goals with less than 14 minutes to go before the Eagles rallied to win, 15-14.
McDonogh also defeated the Reds, 16-13 for the 2014 title and 18-17 for the 2011 title.
The Eagles won this year's regular-season meeting, 15-5, on April 21 thanks in large part to Maddie Jenner winning 12 draws and giving McDonogh a 16-5 edge in draw controls and thus, a huge advantage in possession. Brindi Griffin and Catie May had four goals and two assists each in the win.
After that game, the Reds' Anna Hauser, who took most of the draws against Jenner, said she had some ideas about how to better counter the sophomore's strengths.
Other than to McDonogh, the Reds' only losses were an early setback against John Carroll and a 12-8 loss to Bishop Ireton, the WCAC champions, on April 30.
While McDonogh is No. 1 in every national poll, the Reds are No. 9 in USA Today's Super 25.
In the B Conference game, Glenelg Country is also aiming for a perfect season as well as its second straight championship. The Dragons (17-0) play a rematch of last year's title game with Mercy (15-2) which suffered its only losses this season to the defending champions.
The Dragons won last year's title, 12-7.
