High school coach faces assault charge involving player

URBANA, MD. — A former high school football coach faces a second-degree assault charge stemming from allegations he punched a player in the chest during a heated argument on the sidelines.

The Frederick News-Post reported Monday that David Mencarini has been placed on paid leave from his teaching job at Urbana High School, about 60 miles north of Washington, D.C.

Mencarini resigned his coaching position Sept. 20 after the player's father filed a report with Baltimore County police about the Sept. 3 incident at Milford Mill High School.

No defense attorney is listed for Mencarini in online court records. The Associated Press was unable to leave a message at his home telephone number Tuesday because the voice mailbox was full.
