Girl Athlete of the Week (Jan. 12): Nyjari McNeil, Franklin, indoor track

The sophomore sprinter won the 800-meter race at the Montgomery Invitational Saturday at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. She also finished second in the 500 meters and swept three races at a Baltimore County meet on Wednesday. At the Montgomery meet, McNeil won by nearly nine seconds to finish the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 16.94 seconds – the fastest time in Maryland this fall and the eighth fastest in the country, according to the running web site She was second in the 500 meters by less than a second, finishing in 1:14.59, the second-fastest time in Maryland and the second-fastest in the nation. A first-team All-Metro selection last winter, McNeil is the defending Class 3A state champion at 500 meters and helped the Indians to the state indoor track title.
