Lawrence Smith has been head coach of Dunbar's football team for less than 10 years, but Friday night, he hit a milestone few coaches ever reach. The Poets' 33-0 win over Patterson gave Smith his 100th career victory. He's gotten there faster — in just 117 games — than all but two coaches in Maryland high school football history."It means the world to me," Smith said. "I was just looking the other night at the first-ever game when we played Gwynn Park in 2007 [a 27-6 win]. That was the first game right after coach [Ben] Eaton had passed. I would have never thought at that time that I would be head coach at Dunbar, so that was the first game. And it's a great milestone, especially coming against a rival team that has been a thorn in my side since I've been the head coach."Smith received the standard water-bucket shower from his team after the win, and was presented with the game ball. He said his players will sign it this week. The milestone came a couple of games later than Smith would have preferred, as the Poets opened the season 0-2, but with his 100-17 record, he trails only former Hereford coach Steve Turnbaugh and former DeMatha coach Bill McGregor in the race to 100. Turnbaugh made it in 115 games and McGregor in 116."It means a lot to be mentioned up in the state of Maryland with some of the greatest names," Smith said. "When you're talking about Bill McGregor, that's one of my biggest mentors. I can call Coach McGregor for anything. To be mentioned in the same breath with him, when the NFL still says he's the greatest high school football coach ever, it means a lot, especially for our program being in Baltimore City. It means a lot for myself and for the program as a whole."Smith, who took over the Poets when Eaton died suddenly before the 2007 season, has guided them to five state championships, including in his first season. His teams average more than 10 wins per season and have appeared in the playoffs every year he has coached. The Poets' worst record under Smith was 10-4 in 2014, and they made it to the state final that year.
