Archbishop Spalding boys basketball coach Derrick Lewis has resigned after six seasons, according to the school's athletic director Jeff Parsons.
Spalding went 4-26 this season and fell to the bottom of the Baltimore Catholic League and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference standings.
Lewis, a Maryland basketball standout in the late 1980s, enjoyed his finest coaching season in 2012-13, when he led the Cavaliers to a 22-12 mark and an appearance in the BCL title game. He was named the BCL's Coach of the Year that season.
He will continue on as a physical education and health teacher at Spalding.
"I think I took [the program] as far as I could as an old-school coach and I'm walking away because they need someone different to reach the next level -- a head coach that is less old school," said Lewis, 48.
Parsons said candidates interested in the position can send him a resume and three professional references at parsonsj@archbishopspalding.org. Applications will be accepted until March 27.
