Curley's Murphy named Ravens' Coach of the Week

Archbishop Curley football coach Sean Murphy was named Ravens' High School Coach of the Week Wednesday after leading the Friars to a 49-35 win over Delaware state champion Caravel Academy, a victory that avenged a three-point loss two years ago.

Murphy, in his 17th season with the Friars, earned his 100th career victory Sept. 13 with Curley's 39-7 win over Loyola.

Friday's win over Caravel improved the Friars' record to 4-0 as they prepare to begin their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference schedule this week.

Running backs Marty Costes and Deonte Harris combined to run for 280 yards and scored all of Curley's touchdowns against Caravel. Defensive backs Nick Farmer and Kyle Barnes had interceptions.

"We have great leadership that begins with our 20 seniors," Murphy said in a statement. "We're lucky to have many talented players on the team, so most kids don't have to play both ways on offense and defense."

Murphy joins previous winners Matt Martello of North Carroll and Paul Bernstorf of St. Paul's. All three are in the running for Ravens' High School Coach of the Year, which will be announced Dec. 8 at the Ravens-Vikings game at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Ravens donate $2,000 to the athletic department of each winner, who also receives a Coach of the Week hat and certificate.
