Tyler Mullen, South Carroll
There was just one thing Mullen had left to accomplish during his storied high school career at South Carroll -- winning a state title -- and the senior did just that with a 9-6 victory over Middletown's Brandon Johnson to claim the 171-pound championship at the Class 2A-1A state meet. The win, which followed two previous losses in the state finals, put the exclamation point on a career that also included four straight Carroll County championships and 142 wins -- the most ever by a county wrestler. He finished this season 38-3 with 20 pins, and was ranked No.¤2 in his class by the Maryland State Wrestling Association.
Coach of the Year
Dave Dodson, North Carroll
Dodson's Panthers finished 15-2, including 8-0 in Carroll County and 4-1 in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League's Chesapeake Conference. They then captured their 15th county tournament crown, including the third in the past five years, and ended La Plata's 52-meet state winning streak in the Class 4A-3A dual meet semifinals, before falling in the finals. Dodson, 39, decided to step down at season's end to devote more time to his family. His teams have compiled an 87-10 dual-meet record during his six seasons as coach. He has spent a total of 16 years coaching wrestling, football, lacrosse and track at the school.
