Player of the Year: Katie Schwarzmann, Century
The versatile junior was the catalyst of a team that finished 12-4, excelling on both sides of the ball. Her 94 goals were 37 more than any other player in Carroll County. She used her speed to blow by defenders and rarely missed a chance to finish. She eclipsed the 200-goal mark for her career, and also added 33 assists.
Defensively, the midfielder grabbed 92 ground balls and consistently forced turnovers. Schwarzmann, whose older sister Lauren (Johns Hopkins) was the county's Co-Player of the Year in 2004, also is one of the area's top forwards in soccer and an All-County guard in basketball.
Coach of the Year: Courtney Vaughn, Winters Mill
The Falcons played well beyond their years and gave the five-year-old program its best season in school history. Despite just two seniors on the roster, Vaughn's squad finished 17-2, outlasting Towson in double-overtime for a 14-13 win in the Class 3A-2A state title game.
A year after finishing .500 in Carroll County, Winters Mill went 5-1 in the county to earn its first county title, beating out Liberty on a tie-breaker. The achievements may be the highlight of Vaughn's 20-year coaching career, which includes a 255-73 career mark and last year's induction into the U.S. Lacrosse, Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame.
