Player of the Year: Dan Mruk, Westminster
The senior showed he could do just about anything from his spot at midfield this season, and he could do it with both hands. A finalist for the C. Markland Kelly Award, which annually recognizes the top players in the state, Mruk finished with 35 goals and 45 assists and took the vast majority of Westminster's faceoffs, winning 74 percent.
Already a strong dodger with superior field vision, Mruk worked hard during the offseason on his shooting, and turned himself into a scorer. Now, he will face one of his toughest challenges, shipping off to Paris Island, S.C., later this month for Marine Corps boot camp as part of a program that will pay his way through college.
Coach of the Year: Jeff Doolan, Westminster
Few gave the Owls much of a chance in Carroll County this season after graduating their top three seniors from a year ago and inserting a freshman in goal. Doolan's team, however, emphatically proved its detractors wrong, winning Carroll County with a 6-0 mark, including narrow victories over South Carroll, North Carroll and Century.
Following a 2-3 start, Westminster reeled off nine wins in its next 10 games to advance to the Class 4A-3A North semifinals. Doolan was an All-Metro player at Westminster in the early '90s, before capturing four Howard County titles and a Class 2A-1A state championship as the head coach of Mount Hebron. He took over at Westminster in 2006.
