Calvert Hall ace pitcher Nick Delp sidelined with injury

Nick Delp is two victories shy of becoming Calvert Hall's winningest pitcher of all time, but he'll miss part of this season after taking a pitch to the face last week. (Lloyd Fox, Baltimore Sun)

Calvert Hall standout pitcher Nick Delp will be temporarily sidelined after taking a pitch to the face in the No. 1 Cardinals' 5-4 win over New York's Pittsford Menden on Thursday in Orlando, Fla.

Coach Lou Eckerl said Delp suffered slight fractures to his nose and cheek bone after he was hit by the pitch while squaring to bunt.

No surgery was needed, and Eckerl expects his ace to return to the lineup this season.

Calvert Hall is 10-3 on the season and 5-0 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.

Delp, a three-year starter and an All-Metro second-team selection last season, was 3-0 this year with 18 scoreless innings.  With 20 career wins, he is two shy of tying the program's all-time mark, set by 1995 graduate Andy Bair.
