Broadneck's Rob Harris named Ravens' Coach of the Week

Broadneck's Rob Harris was named Ravens High School Coach of the Week after leading the undefeated No. 2 Bruins to a 42-14 upset Friday night over Anne Arundel County rival and then-No. 2 Arundel.

Both teams went into the game undefeated, but the Bruins scored on their first three possessions and broke a 7-7 tie with 35 unanswered points. After running for Broadneck's first touchdown, quarterback Canaan Gebele threw for four in a row, including three within 3 minutes and eight seconds in the second quarter. He finished with 228 yards on 16 of 29 passing and also ran 12 times for 79 yards.

In addition, the Bruins defense forced three interceptions -- by Ryan Kennedy, Will Schwob and Ali'i Niumatalolo --and special teams blocked a punt.

With the win, the Bruins (8-0) took over sole possession of first place in the county, but they also moved into the top spot in one of the most hotly contested regional playoff races, Class 4A East, ahead of three 7-1 teams, Arundel, Old Mill and North Point.

"The kids were really focused," said Harris in a news release. "They saw this game as a big challenge on the road against a very good team, and they wanted to use this game to validate what they have done all season. It was a great test as we head into the playoffs in a few weeks, and we were excited to come out victorious."

Harris is the eighth Ravens Coach of the Year this season and will join the previous winners at the Ravens-Jaguars game on Dec. 14, where the Ravens will name their High School Coach of the Year. Each weekly winner receives a donation to the school's football program from the Ravens.

Previous winners include Keith Rawlings (John Carroll), Dom Damico (McDonogh), Gene Liebel (North Harford), Greg Long (Havre de Grace), Thomas Browne (Oakland Mills), Marc Mesaros (Eastern Tech) and Brad Wilson (Westminster).
