Girl Athlete of the Week (Jan. 9): Haley Downin, Chesapeake-AA, basketball

The senior point guard had another fine all-around performance in the Cougars’ 60-29 win against Anne Arundel County rival Northeast on Friday, finishing with 15 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals. It was also a special one. With a free throw in the second half, her 14th point of the game, she reached 1,000 points in her four-year career. Downin, a three-sport standout, has played a major part in Chesapeake’s 8-1 start, averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.1 assists this season. In addition to basketball, she was a two-year starter in soccer and will enter her fourth varsity season in softball this spring. Last year, she was a first-team All-Metro pitcher.
