Curley baseball's Marty Costes orally commits to Maryland

An All-Metro second-team selection last season, Costes led the MIAA in home runs, RBIs and batting average. He also plays football and basketball for the Friars.

A former Poly student, Costes transfered to Curley last year and said he had little difficulty adjusting to the MIAA's level of play. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound slugger had spent summers playing for the Parkville Bulldogs, a club team.

"I think it was smooth adjustment for me," Costes said. "I think I've been playing top level ball before that."

Costes' performance resulted in interest from Towson and Navy, too, but Costes said he felt most comfortable in College Park. He said Terps coaches told him he might play the outfield in his freshman season in order to get some at-bats.

That's fine with Costes, who said he would feel comfortable hitting anywhere in the lineup and has an "all-around type of game."

"I can hit for power, for average, steal bases," he said. "I'm pretty much the total package."

Costes said his first official visit to Maryland will come on Nov. 15, when he and other recruits will attend the Terps football team's game against Michigan State.

Curley baseball finished 17-11 last season and lost to Archbishop Spalding, 3-2, in the conference semifinals. Costes drove in the game's first run with a third-inning single.
