Six scholar-athletes from the Baltimore area were among 14 statewide honored at the Maryland Public Secondary Schools' Athletic Association's eighth annual Minds In Motion Scholarship Luncheon Thursday.
Dulaney's Adolfo Carvalho, Perry Hall's Anna Ciattei and Julia Ciattei, Dunbar's Annie McPherson, River Hill's Elizabeth Oldhouser and Mount Hebron's Emily Purnell received scholarship awards of $1,000, provided by the Allstate Foundation, at the luncheon held in the Ravens locker room at M&T Bank Stadium.
Carvalho, the Ciatteis and Oldhouser participated in cross country, indoor track and track and field. McPherson played soccer, softball, badminton and tennis. Purnell played field hockey and basketball and was on the track and field team.
To receive the award, students must have at least a 3.25 unweighted GPA and play at least one interscholastic sport during their four years of high school. More than 500 athletes apllied.
The guest speaker was Jackie Boswell, Stevenson basketball coach and the former Seton Keough coach.
Following are the biographies provided by the MPSSAA for all of the winners:
Adolfo Carvalho, Dulaney
Academic: Member of the French National Honor Society; he is a National Merit Finalist, an Eagle Scout, a member of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra, and served as an intern with the Space Telescope Science Institute.
Athletics: Participated in Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field, and Outdoor T&F for four years.
School Attending: Rice, where he will compete in cross country and track and field.
Anna Ciattei, Perry Hall
Academic: Member of the English, Music, and French National Honor Societies; an AP Scholar with Distinction and National Merit Commended Scholar; she was also first chair alto saxophone in the Baltimore County Jazz Ensemble.
Athletics: Participated in Cross Country, Indoor T&F, and Outdoor T&F each year; her 3200m relay team placed first at county and region championships.
School Attending: UMBC, on a UMBC Premier Award Scholarship.
Julia Ciattei, Perry Hall
Academic: Member of the English, Music, and French National Honor Societies; an AP Scholar with Distinction and National Merit Commended Scholar; she was also a member of the Baltimore County Honors Band and Honors Orchestra.
Athletics: Participated in Cross Country, Indoor T&F, and Outdoor T&F each year; she was the team MVP the past three seasons.
School Attending: UMBC, on a UMBC Premier Award Scholarship.
Annie McPherson, Dunbar
Academic: Two time Ben Carson Scholarship recipient, a member of the school Robotics Team and Students Helping Others Team; she received a Top Computer Scholar Award and has found the time to be a partner for Special Olympics for 4 years.
Athletics: Participated in Soccer, Softball, Badminton, & Tennis.
School Attending: North Carolina A&T.
Elizabeth Oldhouser, River Hill
Academic: Member of the Spanish National Honor Society; Secretary of the FBLA where she earned first place in Business Communication at the State Conference.
Athletics: Participated for 4 years in Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field, and in the spring played 2 years of softball before moving to Track & Field the past two years; team captain of her 2014 county, region, and state champion cross country team; received a grant from the Howard County Striders David Tripp Scholar/Athlete Program earlier this month.
School Attending: Virginia.
Emily Purnell, Mount Hebron
Academic: Member of the Math, Spanish, and English National Honor Societies; earned a gold award on the National Spanish exam; won a Curator's Award in photography; participated in many volunteer activities to help those less fortunate.
Athletics: Played Field Hockey and Basketball all four years of high school and in the spring played Softball for two years before moving on to Track & Field the past two years. Captain of the Varsity Field Hockey team and was voted First Team All-Howard County in Field Hockey as well.
School Attending: Penn State where she will play club field hockey.
Corbin Austin, Linganore
Academic: Member of the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society. He also received a Platinum Club Award for maintaining a 4.0 cumulative unweighted GPA and an exemplary attendance award each of the past three years.
Athletics: Participated in Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse all four years. He was a Frederick News-Post All-Area Football Honorable Mention this past fall.
School Attending: Maryland.
Natasha Freed, Thomas Johnson
Academic: 2015 Frederick County Science Fair Grand Champion; an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Commended Scholar. She is also a member of the All-County Orchestra.
Athletics: Participation each year was in Cross Country, Swimming, Outdoor Track & Field, except for replacing swimming with Indoor Track her senior year.
School Attending: Johns Hopkins, where she will participate in Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor Track & Field.
Paula Kleyman, Winston Churchill
Academic: Member of the Math, Science, & Engineering National Honor Societies; National Merit Scholar Finalist; she was also a member of the school Key Club involved in volunteer service projects.
Athletics: 12-season athlete who participated in Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor Track & Field with 11 varsity letters earned.
School Attending: Maryland on a University Presidential Scholarship and a CSC Corporate Scholarship by virtue of being a Finalist for the National Merit Scholarship program.
Obichi Onwukwe, Parkdale
Academic: National Achievement Award recipient; President of her school's National Honor Society chapter; has been involved with numerous volunteer community service activities to help feed the hungry.
Athletics: An 11-season athlete who participated in Soccer, Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field; County Champ in indoor and outdoor 800m run; All-Gazette First team in cross country and indoor track this year.
School Attending: Maryland, on a National Achievement Scholarship and a Banneker Key Scholarship. She will be participating in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
Jenna Reimer, Stephen Decatur
Academic: Member of the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society; National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar.
Athletics: She is a four year, 12 sport athlete participating in Cross County, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. She earned All-Bayside Honors in all three sports this year and was named the Daily Times Athlete of the Year.
School Attending: Maryland, Honors College.
Matthew Sciamanna, Bohemia Manor
Academic: National Merit Scholar, Senior Class President, Treasurer for his National Honor Society Chapter, US Patent holder, and a 2-time FBLA East Region Champion.
Athletics: He is a four year, 12 season athlete participating in Football, Wrestling, and Lacrosse
School Attending: Harvard where he hopes to join the lacrosse or rowing teams.
Hannah Simmerman, Great Mills
Academic: AP Scholar of Distinction; served as VP and Parliamentarian of her National Honor Society chapter; won first place in Environmental Management at a Regional Science Fair, along with an American Conservation Award.
Athletics: Participated all four years and twelve seasons in Field Hockey, Swimming, and Lacrosse where she was team captain this year for field hockey and the past two years in swimming.
School Attending: Cornell, as a Meinig Scholar and Engineering Scholar.
Diego Alejandro Zarate Northwest
Academic: Member of the National Science Honor Society; an AP Scholar with Honor; Hispanic Heritage Foundation (Washington, DC Region) Silver Youth Award recipient.
Athletics: Four year, 12-season athlete who participated in Cross Country, Indoor T&F, and Outdoor T&F. He won state 4A titles in the 1600m run the past two seasons of indoor track and in the 2014 outdoor season as well. He also won the state 4A title in the 800m run this past indoor season. This spring he place 3rd in the Boys Championship Mile at the Penn Relays.
School Attending: Virginia Tech, where he will run cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field.
