All-Metro Girls Soccer Player of the Year: Emily Roberts, Archbishop Spalding

Who is the All-Metro Girls Soccer Player of the Year?

Archbishop Spalding's Emily Roberts, a senior sweeper and four-year starter, has been a regular on the All-Metro teams since her sophomore year, displaying poised play and leadership throughout her career.

In her senior season, she raised her game to an even higher level and the result was an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship for the No. 1 Cavaliers. Finishing with a 12-2-3 mark, the Cavaliers yielded 11 goals, six of which came when Roberts wasn't on the field.

Despite missing the championship game due to an injury sustained in the team's semifinal win against John Carroll, Roberts had already established herself as the top player on the top team. Her influence was in place as the Cavaliers defeated Notre Dame Prep on penalty kicks after scoreless play through two overtimes.

"Emily is an all-around complete defender. She is good in one-vs.-one situations. She has great awareness of when to step and close pressure," Spalding coach Ashly Kennedy said. "Her distribution is very good out of the back as she can connect the right passes even under pressure situations. She is fantastic in the air. She is a player with a calming poise and presence on the field."

Roberts, an All-Metro second-team selection as a sophomore before moving up to the first team as a junior, has committed to Old Dominion.
