Severna Park boys and girls swimming teams win 4A East Region championship

Andrew Gillespie won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breast stroke to lead the Severna Park boys swimming team to victory at the Class 4A East Region championship meet, held Saturday at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center.

Gillespie also teamed with Tyler Moran, Colin Dennis and Morgan Sloan as the Falcons opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay.

Sloan won the 200 freestyle while Moran was first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 100 freestyle for the Falcons, whose 352 points were 68 points better than second place Broadneck’s 284.

Bel Air finished third with 259, Annapolis was fourth with 237, Arundel was fifth with 232 and South River finished sixth with 204. North County (133) came in seventh, Meade (132) was eighth, Old Mill (105) was ninth and Glen Burnie (29) came in 12th.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Moran, Giacomo Bertazzon, Jack DeBaugh and Sloan touched first, Bertazzon was second in the 100 breast stroke and third in the 100 butterfly, Henry Wright took the bronze in the 500 freestyle, while the 200 freestyle relay team took second for Severna Park.

Will Redford from Annapolis was first in the 50 freestyle and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team with Ivan Michels, Ryan Mahon and Eoin Lenham. Redford was part of the second place 200 medley relay team and the second place 400 freestyle relay teams. Eoin Lenham won the 100 freestyle and joined Redford on all three relay teams. Michals came in third in the 200 individual medley.

Chris Jensen from Meade finished second in the 100 butterfly, Henry Sykes from South River took third in the 50 freestyle and Griffin Anderson from Arundel was third in the 100 breast stroke.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the state championship meet on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center.

Krista Gretz finished in first in the 100 freestyle and took third in the 200 freestyle as the Severna Park girls also captured the Class 4A East Region title on Saturday. Gretz also combined with Mackenzie Burfoot, Shannon Sullivan and Madeline Goger to win the 200 freestyle relay then teamed with Eliza Patty, Sullivan and Camryn Raines to win the 400 freestyle relay

Raines took first in the 100 breast stroke and second in the 100 butterfly, Goger was second in the 200 freestyle, Kate Myers was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle, Sullivan placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay team came in third for Severna Park, which outdistanced second place Broadneck, 350-329.

South River came in third with 241, followed by Bel Air (272), Annapolis (241) and Arundel (134). Old Mill was next with 132, North County had 93, Meade followed with 73 and Glen Burnie was 10th with 61.

Skye Bilger led the South River charge by finishing first in the 500 freestyle and came right back to win the 100 backstroke. Teammate Lily Bussey came in third in the 100 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay team took the bronze for the Seahawks.

Emma Baca from Annapolis won the 200 individual medley, Nora Lenham finished third in the 50 freestyle and the Panthers’ 200 medley relay took second.

In the 3A/2A/1A East Region meet, Chesapeake’s Aiden Linehan finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle, while Natasha Paciello took second in the 100 butterfly for the Cougars.
