Maryland suspended freshman quarterback Gage Shaffer for the final two games of the season for a violation of the student-athlete code of conduct, a team spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

The Alabama Media Group first reported Shaffer's suspension.

Shaffer is redshirting and hadn't appeared in a game this season. He impressed in Maryland's open scrimmage in August when he completed 16 of 21 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Shaffer is the second Maryland player to be suspended for a violation of the student-athlete code of conduct this week after running back Wes Brown was suspended indefinitely Monday.

Shaffer was a consensus three-star recruit out of Frankfort High School in West Virginia. The Short Gap, W.Va., native was 30-7 as a starter and was named first-team all-area three times.

Maryland's available quarterbacks for the final two games of the season are junior Perry Hills, junior Caleb Rowe, sophomore Shane Cockerille and senior Dexter Foreman. Senior Daxx Garman had season-ending shoulder surgery this month.
