Maryland National Signing Day 2016: Richard Merritt

Maryland is signing its first recruiting class under coach DJ Durkin through the day on Wednesday, and as verbal commitments make their pledges final on National Signing Day, we're bringing you introductions to these future Terps. Archbishop Carroll's Richard Merritt was the first commit after Durkin took over as coach.

Player: Richard Merritt

Position: Offensive guard

High School: Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.)

Height: 6 feet, 5 inches

Weight: 345 pounds

Other schools considered: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan State and a host of other prominent programs, per 247sports

247sports Composite: Four stars, No. 300 nationally, No. 14 offensive guard, No. 4 in Washington, D.C.

Rivals: Four stars, No. 21 offensive guard, No. 4 in Washington, D.C.

ESPN: Four stars, No. 18 offensive guard, No. 4 in Washington, D.C.

Scout: Four stars, No. 21 offensive guard, No. 1 offensive guard in Washington, D.C.

The Big Ten Conference is a "lineman league," as former Maryland coach Randy Edsall said so many times, and the Terps are trying to keep pace with another beefy guard in their class in Merritt. Merritt participated in the Under Armour All-America game where fellow offensive guard commit Terrance Davis of DeMatha announced his decision. Merritt is another piece of a promising core of offensive linemen in College Park.

Merritt committed to Maryland on Dec. 18 and was the first to pledge to coach DJ Durkin.
