Former Maryland offensive lineman Mason Zimmerman has transferred to Stony Brook, the school announced this week.

Zimmerman's impending transfer was reported Monday.

Since Stony Brook is a Football Championship Subdivision program, Zimmerman will be eligible to play immediately as a redshirt freshman. A former three-star recruit in the Class of 2015, the Ohio native sat out the fall and didn't appear in the mix for a spot on the offensive line during spring practice.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Mason Zimmerman will transfer from Maryland, according to a report.

"The addition of Mason solidifies our offensive line for the 2016 season," Stony Brook coach Chuck Priore said in a release. "He will add a physical presence to our group and allow us to get back to the dominant running game that is needed to compete for championships."

"Excited to start this new journey!!" Zimmerman wrote on Twitter. "Everything happens for a reason."

Former Maryland running back Brandon Ross was cut by the Minnesota Vikings, while former Terps defensive back Sean Davis signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Stony Brook went 5-5 in 2015.

Maryland's offensive line competition appears to be wide open after spring practice. The Terps are replacing three starters from last season's team.
