The first-ever meeting between the teams is set to be played in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 10, 2022 while the 49ers will make the return trip to College Park almost a year later on Sept. 9, 2023.
Charlotte played its first season as a full-time Football Bowl Subdivision member last fall and went 2-10. The 49ers started their football program in 2013, and they play in Conference USA.
Of course, much can change between now and 2022. Back in October 2012, Maryland announced it would face Wisconsin in a home-and-home series in 2020 and 2021. A month later, the Terps joined the Badgers in the Big Ten Conference.
Maryland has a home-and-home series scheduled with Texas for 2017 and 2018, which Texas announced in September 2010. At the time, Ralph Friedgen was still coach, Maryland was in the ACC, the Longhorns had appeared in the national championship game eight months earlier and Randy Edsall was about to lead Connecticut to the Fiesta Bowl. So who knows what the football landscape will look like when Maryland squares off with Charlotte at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Sept. 10, 2022.
