Detroit Lions add former Maryland coach Randy Edsall to staff

Former Maryland football coach Randy Edsall is back on his feet after his October firing. The Detroit Lions announced Sunday that that they've hired Edsall as their new director of football research and special projects.

Acccording to DetroitLions.com, "the football research department assists in all aspects of game preparation, and also provides information to the coaching, personnel and football administration departments to help improve the team's decisions in the draft, free agency and on gameday."

Edsall worked with Detroit general manager Bob Quinn at Connecticut in 1999. Quinn was a graduate assistant on Edsall's staff.

Edsall was fired in October after Maryland started the season 2-4.

This is Edsall's first non-head coaching job since he was Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator in 1998. He has NFL coaching experience from his time as Jacksonville's defensive backs coach for four years in the 1990s under Tom Coughlin.
