New Maryland coach DJ Durkin penned an open letter to the Maryland fan base that was emailed out Friday morning in which he welcomed "Terp Nation" to the "new era of Maryland Football."

Durkin was formally introduced as the 36th coach in Maryland history Thursday in an impressive news conference in which athletic director Kevin Anderson called Durkin "the best guy out there."

"It is a tremendous honor and privilege to represent the University of Maryland as your new head football coach," Durkin wrote. "In only my first day as a part of the Maryland community I can already tell how extraordinary this place is, and my wife, Sarah, and my children and I are looking forward to calling it home."

Durkin, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, who has previously coached under Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, said he's "straightforward and honest." And Anderson came away from his interviews with Durkin impressed, citing his coaching pedigree as a significant factor in his hire.

"Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with some outstanding individuals, each of whom has taught me a great deal about what it takes to be successful as a team, both on and off the field," Durkin wrote. "I'm looking forward to bringing an exciting and successful brand to College Park."

Thursday morning's news conference was Durkin's first public appearance as Maryland's coach, but he hasn't made an appearance before fans yet.

"As Terrapin fans, you play an integral role in our success!" Durkin wrote. "Your enduring support is what makes Maryland special and, together, we will do tremendous things. Thank you again for your incredible passion and Maryland pride, and, as always, Fear the Turtle!"
