Maryland's Denzel Conyers treated for concussion, released from hospital

COLLEGE PARK — Maryland defensive back Denzel Conyers, who was taken from practice Thursday in an ambulance, was treated for a concussion and released from the hospital, coach DJ Durkin said Friday afternoon.

"We did all the tests, everything's clear," Durkin said after practice. "He's good. He's being treated for a concussion. Everything's good. He was back with us last night."

Conyers, a senior, was carted off the field on a stretcher early in practice on Thursday and taken from the practice fields in an ambulance. Maryland released a statement later in the day that Conyers was "stable and alert" but didn't provide specifics on his injury.

Durkin said Conyers has returned to meetings with the team, though he didn't provide a timetable for his return to practice. Conyers had been working with the second-team defense at safety during fall camp. In spring practice, he had been working with the first team. At 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, Conyers has good size and athleticism, which could play well in the aggressive defensive scheme of Durkin and defensive coordinator Andy Buh.

Conyers appeared in nine games last season and made 15 tackles, including one sack.

"Obviously, we're fortunate there," Durkin said. "What a great kid, great player. Our coaches, his teammates were all very concerned about him but our medical staff did an unbelievable job yesterday in how they responded and handled it. Everything's good. Denzel's fine. He'll be back with us practicing soon."
