Upsets and near misses highlighted the past weekend of Division I women’s lacrosse, scrambling the Top 20 and dropping Maryland from the No. 1 spot.
The defending national champion fell to then-No. 8 North Carolina, 16-15 in overtime Saturday, ending the Terps’ 56-game regular-season winning streak. The loss sent the Terps tumbling to No. 4. The Tar Heels rose to No. 3.
With Maryland’s loss, Stony Brook takes over the No. 1 ranking for the first time in program history. The Seawolves have never been to the final four but reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time last season before falling to Maryland. They’re aiming for their first national championship when they host the final four Memorial Day weekend.
Boston College, which lost to Maryland in the national final, moved up to No. 2, matching last season’s final ranking. While the Seawolves have a win over Southern California, which was No. 7 at the time, the Eagles play their first top-10 opponent when they host No. 8 Navy on Tuesday.
In a sign of the tight battle for position in this year’s poll, Stony Brook received 21 votes for the No. 1 spot while Boston College, North Carolina and Maryland received one each. (The Baltimore Sun does not vote.)
No. 6 Florida and No. 8 Navy escaped upset bids Sunday. Florida scored the final two goals to win, 17-16, in overtime against Loyola Maryland. Navy held off Michigan, 11-10.
Only two teams held the same position in the poll as they had last week — No. 15 Penn State and No. 20 Duke.
James Madison, which defeated North Carolina, 15-14, in its season opener, moved up to No. 5. Northwestern’s 9-5 win over then-No. 7 USC put the Wildcats back in the top 10, a week after falling in an upset to Duke, 9-8.
Johns Hopkins debuted at No. 19 after falling, 12-11, to then-No. 14 Penn Saturday. Towson, which did not play this week, moved up two spots to No. 9, thanks in part to its season-opening 14-13 win at then-No. 3 North Carolina.
Eighteen Division I teams remain unbeaten, including three in Maryland: Navy, Towson and UMBC.
