Inside Lacrosse women's poll for second week of 2018 season and what's next for state teams

This week’s Inside Lacrosse Cascade women’s media poll and how the local teams fared.

The second weekend of competition featured just one major upset among ranked Division I women’s lacrosse teams. No. 10 Duke moved up eight spots after slipping past then-No. 9 Northwestern, 9-8, thanks to three saves on the Wildcats’ final possession by goalie Gabbe Cadoux, a McDonogh graduate. Another former Eagle, Olivia Jenner won five of the first six draws to help the Blue Devils get off to a 4-2 start.

Back in Maryland, every Division I team remains undefeated. No. 1 Maryland won at then-No. 3 Florida, the highest-ranked team on the Terps schedule.

No. 11 Towson and No. 6 James Madison — who scored major upsets in their openers over preseason Top 5s Penn State and North Carolina, respectively — rolled over unranked opponents.

No. 10 Navy and UMBC also won easily. Mount St. Mary’s won its first opener in more than a decade thanks in part to nine draw controls from freshman Beanie Colson (Manchester Valley).

The undefeated roll for the state teams, however, will end Wednesday when Loyola Maryland plays its season opener at Johns Hopkins and UMBC heads to Mount St. Mary’s.

Could the Towson women's lacrosse team's season-opening win over No. 4 Penn State loom large come May and NCAA tournament time?
