Inside Lacrosse women's poll and what's next for state teams (April 9)

The top five teams in the Inside Lacrosse women's media poll have held steady for three weeks, but the shuffle among next five continues with Towson moving to No. 6.

The No. 6 ranking matches the all-time high for the Tigers, who moved up after lopsided wins over Drexel and Delaware. Loyola Maryland's 12-11 overtime loss to then-No. 18 Syracuse Thursday helped the Tigers leap the Greyhounds.

Loyola rebounded with a 16-12 win Saturday over No. 12 Navy which helped them fall only two spots to No. 8. Two of the Greyhounds' three losses have come in overtime to ranked opponents.

Northwestern, which has a win over Syracuse, moved up two spots to No. 7 after beating Notre Dame, 20-10. No. 9 Florida dropped a spot and Penn bounced back into the Top 10 with a 13-11 win over surging Dartmouth, which came into the poll this week at No. 17.

Defending national champion Maryland remained No. 3 after wins over then No. 10 Virginia and Rutgers. The Terps have won 10 straight since dropping a 16-15 overtime decision to North Carolina.

The only unbeaten teams in Division I, No. 1 Stony Brook and No. 2 Boston College held onto their spots as did No. 4 James Madison and No. 5 North Carolina.

A couple of teams that have been struggling — No. 14 Penn State and No. 16 Syracuse — have opportunities for upsets Saturday.

The Nittany Lions had dropped out of the poll before Friday's 22-13 win over then-No. 10 Virginia. They host No. 7 Northwestern Saturday in a Big Ten contest.

Syracuse is 0-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference during what has been an up-and-down season. After slipping past Loyola in a non-conference game, the Orange fell to Virginia Tech, 15-14, Saturday. They host No. 5 North Carolina Saturday for a chance to get back on track. After that, No. 2 Boston College heads to the Carrier Dome April 19.
