State lacrosse roundup: Class helps Duke top Loyola men

Deemer Class (Loyola Blakefield) and Myles Jones scored four goals each and No. 5 Duke used a second-half run to beat No. 14 Loyola Maryland, 14-8, in men's lacrosse Saturday.

Zach Herreweyers scored the second half's first two goals for an 8-7 Greyhounds lead, but the Blue Devils (6-1) responded with seven unanswered goals to pull away.

Loyola (3-3) scored 46 seconds into the second half as Nikko Pontrello picked up a ground ball behind the cage and fed Herreweyers on the right side. Herreweyers tied the game at 7.

He added the go-ahead goal with 12:17 left in the third quarter.

That was last goal that the Greyhounds would score, as Duke's Jones scored 62 seconds later, starting a 7-0 run that came from goals by Jones and Class.

Loyola had only six shots and turned the ball over 10 times from that point. The Blue Devils outshot the Greyhounds 48-26 and picked up 35 ground balls to Loyola's 20.

Duke scored eight of its 14 goals after Loyola turnovers.

No. 15 Towson 11, UMBC 7: The Tigers (4-2) took a 4-0 lead and never looked back, beating the host Retrievers (2-3).

Andrew Hodgson scored the game's first two goals and finished with a game-high four for Towson. Max Maxwell and Jack Gannon had two goals each for UMBC.

Mount St. Mary's 7, Furman 6: Clayton Wainer scored the game-winner with 2:05 left to lift the Mount (2-3) over the host Paladins (1-5).

With the game tied at 6, Ryan Lamon (Severn) fed Wainer on the game-winning play. Mount goalkeeper Matt Vierheller made 14 saves.

Stevenson 11, Roanoke 8: Kyle D'Onofrio (Fallston) scored a career-high three goals to lift the Mustangs (3-1) over the host Maroons (2-2).

Stevenson scored five goals over the second and third quarters to distance itself from Roanoke.

Frostburg State 14, Washington College 9: Nick Stailey (four goals, one assist) and Devin Colgrove (one goal, six assists) powered the host Bobcats (4-0) past the Shoremen (1-3).

Colgrove (Dulaney) gave Frostburg State a 1-0 lead with 14:25 left in the first quarter. Tanner Barbieri had four goals for Washington College.

No. 12 Penn State 12, No. 18 Loyola Maryland 8: The host Greyhounds (1-4) led 8-7 before surrendering five goals over the final 21:23.

Jenna Mosketti (Fallston) started the run for the Nittany Lions (4-1), and Madison Cyr (Winters Mill) scored the last goal with 5:42 left. Loyola's Hannah Schmitt and Penn State's Steph Lazo (St. Mary's) each scored three goals.

The Greyhounds' Taryn VanThof fed Annie Thomas (John Carroll) for the game's first goal at 29:23, and Thomas assisted Molly Hulseman at 28:50 to give Loyola a 2-0 advantage by the 28:50 mark.

The Nittany Lions answered, scoring five straight to take a 5-2 lead at the 14:12 mark.

Back-to-back goals from Schmitt halted Penn State's run and pulled Loyola within 5-4 with 7:43 remaining in the half, but the Nittany Lions kept the Greyhounds from tying the game with a goal at 4:57.

Furman 12, Mount St. Mary's 11, OT: The host Mount (1-3) rallied from a six-goal deficit to force overtime but was outscored 2-1 by the Paladins (5-0) in the extra period.

Kelly Maloney (River Hill) completed her hat trick for Mount St.Mary's with 26 seconds left in overtime.

Navy 20, Lafayette 5: Loren Generi and junior Katie Gallagher (C.Milton Wright) combined for nine goals and four assists to help the Mids (7-1, 1-0 Patriot League) past the host Leopards (1-6, 0-1).

Gallagher had five goals and Generi had four goals and four assists for Navy, which improved to 8-0 all time in league openers.

Towson 13, Georgetown 10: Andi Raymond had four goals to power the Tigers (2-0) past the host Hoyas (1-3).

Six players scored for Towson.

"Andi broke through today and had a big day," Tigers coach Sonia LaMonica said. "We talk a lot about sharing the load and I thought we did a lot of that today. It was nice to see some of our other kids stepping up."

Washington & Lee 9, Salisbury 8: The host Generals (4-1) took a 9-6 lead with 3:56 left and held on to beat the visiting Sea Gulls (1-2).

Kate Haker (Westminster) had three goals for Salisbury.
