College lacrosse roundup (May 20): Warren, Wongus lift Salisbury men to NCAA title game

Emory Wongus scored the go-ahead goal with four minutes remaining and the Salisbury men's lacrosse team made a defensive stand in the final minutes to defeat host Gettysburg, 8-7, in an NCAA Division III national semifinal Sunday.

After Wongus' goal, Sea Gulls sophomore goalie Brandon Warren (Calvert Hall) stopped a game-tying attempt with less than 20 seconds left to play, sealing the victory and sending the three-time defending champion Sea Gulls (20-3) back to Foxborough, Mass., to compete in the program's 18th national championship game.

Griffin Moroney scored three goals to lead Salisbury, which will face Wesleyan (Conn.) on Sunday at Gillette Stadium at 1p.m.

The Sea Gulls defense stood tall in the final two minutes as Gettysburg (19-3) had three chances to tie the game, each denied by Warren. Kyle Tucker led Salisbury's defensive effort with a team-best four caused turnovers and four ground balls.


Salisbury 9, Trinity (Conn.) 8: Allie Hynson (Mount de Sales) scored with 11 seconds left to lead the host Sea Gulls (21-1) over the Bantams (13-7) in an NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinal.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first half, Trinity tied the game at 8 on Abby McInerney's goal with 4:05 remaining.

Hynson finished with three goals and Dana King had two goals and an assist for the Sea Gulls. Gianna Falcone made six saves to earn her 19th win of the season.

Salisbury advances to the NCAA semifinals to face Gettysburg, a 13-10 winner over Amherst on Sunday. The Sea Gulls and Bullets will meet in Salem, Va., on Saturday at a time to be determined.
