Supernova owns 4th quarter, outshines Eclipse, 24-15, in MLL All-Star Game

Team Supernova used a nine-goal fourth-quarter run to defeat Team Eclipse, 24-15, in Saturday night's Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game in the rain before an announced 6,184 at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

The Hamilton Nationals' Kevin Crowley was named Most Valuable Player after a three-goal, two-assist performance.


"It was a lot of fun. It's great to play in front of such a big crowd," Crowley said. "They stuck out the weather and these conditions. They're avid fans. We're here to grow the game of lacrosse, and I think we did a really great job tonight."

Supernova, captained by MLL Ultimate Fan Fantasy winner Frank Ranfone, dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Eclipse, captained by UFF winner Cameron MacKenzie, 9-2 in the final period.

Denver's Zack Greer scored the first goal of the quarter for Eclipse to make it 15-14 in favor of Supernova, but Supernova dominated the rest of the quarter, scoring the next nine goals to stretch the lead to 24-14. Crowley and the Boston Cannons' Kevin Buchanan led the fourth-quarter charge with two goals each. Buchanan finished with a game-high four goals.

Supernova got off to a quick start, with Crowley getting on the scoreboard in the first minute and the Ohio Machine's Steele Stanwick (Loyola High) following for a 2-0 lead.

Stanwick finished with a game-high four assists.

Note: Mike Sawyer, who who graduated from Loyola University in May after scoring the second-most goals in the school's Division I history, won the MLL's fastest-shot contest at 114 mph. He broke the league record of 111 mph previously shared by Kyle Hartzell (Salisbury) and Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins). Jesse Schwartzman (Johns Hopkins, Pikesville) won the first long-distance accuracy contest, and Buchanan took the freestyle competition for the second time.
