Lacrosse roundup: Goucher men beat Catholic days after Matt Gabriel's death

There was some question as to whether the Goucher men's lacrosse team's home game against Catholic would even be played Thursday, three days after the death of sophomore midfielder Matt Gabriel of Austin, Texas, who was struck by a car.

But the Gabriel family encouraged coach Brian Kelly and the team to play, and the host Gophers opened with a 4-0 run and beat the Cardinals, 14-5.

The win clinched a playoff berth for the Gophers (6-6, 4-1 Landmark Conference). Catholic fell to 7-6, 2-3. Sam Morgan finished with a game-high four goals for Goucher.

Lebanon Valley 13, Hood 5: The host Blazers (4-10, 1-5 Commonwealth Conference), led by Tai Foster with two goals, fell behind 5-0 after the first quarter and never recovered. The Flying Dutchmen (7-6, 3-4) were led by Malik Pedruso with five goals.

Stevenson 13, Widener 4: Marissa Meiklejohn (Old Mill) had three goals to lead the Mustangs (10-4, 5-0 Commonwealth Conference) to their ninth straight win, beating the host Pride (3-10, 3-3).

Nation women

No. 19 Louisville 12, Connecticut 7: Faye Brust (John Carroll) had a game-high five goals and Ashley Peacock made seven saves to lead the host Cardinals (11-3, 5-0 Big East) past the Huskies (8-6, 3-2).
