Previewing the week ahead for Maryland men's lacrosse teams

No. 1 Loyola (8-1)

Coming up: At Colgate, Saturday, noon


Comment: The Greyhounds and Raiders will meet for the first time with Colgate trailing Loyola by just one game in the Patriot League standings. The Greyhounds and Denver are the only teams with two players in the Top 15 in Division I in shooting percentage; junior attackman Nikko Pontrello and senior midfielder Kevin Ryan have converted 51.6 percent and 48.4 percent of their shots, respectively.

No. 7 Maryland (7-1)


Coming up: Vs. No. 8 Virginia, Sunday, noon, Byrd Stadium; Vs. Robert Morris, Wednesday, 5 p.m., Byrd Stadium

Comment: The Terps are 46-44 against the Cavaliers and will meet the Colonials for the first time. Junior attackman Jay Carlson (St. Paul's) ranks third on the team in goals with 15 and leads in shooting percentage at .517.

No. 10 Johns Hopkins (5-2)

Coming up: Vs. No. 6 North Carolina, Saturday, 2 p.m., Homewood Field

Comment: The Blue Jays are 24-18 in this series, but the Tar Heels have won the past two meetings and six of the last seven. Johns Hopkins is one of four teams with two players in the top 15 in points per game as sophomore attackman Ryan Brown (Calvert Hall) and junior attackman Wells Stanwick (Boys' Latin) have averaged 5.0 and 4.4.

No. 19 Towson (7-2)

Coming up: At Hofstra, Saturday, 7 p.m.

Comment: The Tigers trail 24-20 in their series with the Pride, but have won the last two meetings. Senior attackman Devin Grimaldi, who scored five goals in his first three years, has scored six times in 2014.

Mount St. Mary's (0-9)

Coming up: Vs. Hobart, Saturday, noon, Waldron Family Stadium; at St. Joseph's, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Comment: The Mountaineers will play the Statesmen, a Northeast Conference newcomer, for the first time; they hold a 13-4 advantage over the Hawks. With one four-goal outburst in Tuesday's 15-8 loss to Robert Morris, junior attackman Mark Hojnoski ranks second on the team in goals with six.

Navy (3-5)


Coming up: At Boston University, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment: The Midshipmen and Terriers will meet for the first time and as Patriot League foes. All six of senior midfielder Pat Durkin's goals this season have occurred at home.

UMBC (4-4)

Coming up: Vs. Stony Brook, Friday, 7:30 p.m., UMBC Stadium

Comment: The Retrievers own a 12-7 lead in their series with the Seawolves heading into their America East opener. Goalkeeper Connor Gordon's six saves in Saturday's 17-7 rout of Mount St. Mary's ended a seven-game streak in which the redshirt freshman had made double-digit stops in each contest.
