Loyola women's lacrosse coach and former Maryland star Jen Adams will be on the sidelines when her Australian national team begins play Thursday at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.

The midfielder tore her right ACL while training with the team Thursday in Hunt Valley. The injury happened on a routine shooting drill, Adams said.

"I've been extremely fortunate up until this point [in my career]. I really haven't had any injury," she said. "It's a new one — it's a new challenge."

Adams, who was inducted to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame last year and is regarded as the best women's player of all time, led Australia to the team's World Cup championship in 2005 and to a runner-up finish behind the United States in 2009. A native of Brighton in South Australia, she began representing her country as a 15-year-old on the U19 national team that won gold in 1995.

On Monday, she was traveling to Canada with the team she captains. Competing in the same pool that includes the U.S., Canada and England, Australia faces Wales on Thursday.

"I consider myself still a player," Adams said. "Maybe I won't be able to step foot on the field, but I'll be able to help out on the sidelines, playing as big of a role as I possibly can and helping them continue to travel on our journey.

"We have a lot of goals in mind and I still feel very much a part of that."

In College Park, Adams won the NCAA championship in each of her four years playing from 1998 to 2001. As a senior, she was named the national player of the year for a third straight season and won the first-ever Tewaaraton Award. She remains the NCAA's all-time career leader in points with 445.

Adams would not rule out the possibility of her playing in the 2017 World Cup.

"I think I've learned in my career not to ever rule anything out," she said. "You just never know what might happen."
