Digest (Feb. 21) Marriotts Ridge grad Carly Miller Miller propels Mount St. Mary's to women's lacrosse victory

Carly Miller (Marriotts Ridge) scored her second goal and the game-winner with 39 seconds left to play as visiting Mount St. Mary's (2-0) won 9-8 over UMBC (2-1) in women's lacrosse Thursday. The Mount used a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead with 7:40 left before the Retrievers scored twice over the final four minutes. Grayson Corbett (Wilde Lake) had the tying goal for UMBC with 1:52 left to play.

More women's lacrosse: Sam Apuzzo and Kenzie Kent scored four goals each to lead No. 1 Boston College (3-0) to a 25-14 victory over host Massachusetts (1-1). The Eagles opened with a 15-8 run in the first half. Boston College hosts Harvard Saturday at 1 p.m.


Men's basketball: Salisbury senior Blair Davis (City) was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference first team while Sea Gulls sophomore Mike Ward (St. Paul's) picked up second-team honors. Davis leads the team and the CAC, averaging 4.5 assists per game. Ward has been one of the top scorers in the league, averaging 15 points per game. ... Senior Darryl Williams (Glenelg Country) led all scorers with 12 points as fifth-ranked and top-seeded Randolph-Macon defeated Randolph, 79-42, on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament to advance to Saturday's semifinals and extend its win streak to 11.

softball: Because of inclement weather and poor field conditions, the season-opening Coppin State series scheduled for Saturday and Sunday against Lafayette has been cancelled. After back-to-back weather-related cancellations, the Eagles are scheduled to open the season March 1-3 at the Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic, hosted by Central Arkansas.


Sykesville's Buch wins debuton Minor League Golf Tour

Bennett Buch of Sykesville, making his first start on the Minor League Golf Tour, birdied the fourth extra hole for the win Thursday at The Evergreen Club in Palm Beach, Fla. Buch outlasted Dominick Vennari of Baltimore after they tied at 7-under par 65. Annapolis native Bart George finished third at 67. At the par-3 fourth, Buch sank a 15-foot birdie for the victory moments after Vennari missed from 25 feet. They halved the first three holes with birdie-4, par-4 and another birdie-4. In regulation, each made seven birdies, five in the back nine. Neither had a bogey. For his first pro win, Buch received $700 from the $3,350 purse. Vennari, runner-up among 25 starters, collected $600, including $50 from the skins game. Just a day before playing at Evergreen, Buch scored 10 strokes higher in the pre-qualifier for the Honda Classic next week at PGA National, missing big with a three over 75 on the Estate course.

National women's soccer league: The Washington Spirit 's 24-game National Women's Soccer League regular-season schedule has been unveiled. Ten of the the Spirit's 12 home games will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex, and two will be played at a venue to be named after the conclusion of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Washington will open the season at home on April 13 against Sky Blue FC at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Go to to view the full schedule.
