Nats exercise '16 option on Matt Williams' contract
The Washington Nationals announced that they have exercised the 2016 option on the contract of manager Matt Williams. The deal also contains an option for the 2017 season. The move was expected, and eliminates any concern that the reigning National League Manager of the Year would transform into a lame duck in a season in which his team is the odds-on World Series favorite.

More MLB: The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free-agent outfielder Chris Dickerson, a former Oriole, to a minor league contract and invited him to major league spring training. Dickerson, 32, hit .224 with two home runs and six RBIs in 41 games for the Cleveland Indians last year. He's a career .257 hitter in 355 games over the past seven seasons. ... The Seattle Mariners agreed to terms with former Orioles left-handed pitcher Joe Saunders on a minor league contract.
College: Sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn gave up just three hits over seven innings as No. 13 Maryland defeated South Alabama, 8-0, in baseball Friday night in Mobile, Ala. Junior LaMonte Wade (St. Paul's) was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Junior Kevin Martir added three hits, and freshman Andrew Bechtold drove in two runs. The win gives Maryland its first 4-0 start since 1987. The Terps are 19-4 in their past 23 games dating to last season.

Navy squanders lead, loses to Holy Cross, 48-44
Host Holy Cross scored 12 of the last 15 baskets and beat Navy, 48-44, in women's basketball. The Mids (15-12), Crusaders (13-16), Lehigh and Bucknell are in a four-way tie for third place in the Patriot League standings with two games left. Each team is 9-7.
More games: Braennan Farrar scored 19 points but Morgan State (9-17, 6-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell, 63-47, to host North Carolina Central (7-18, 5-8). ... Genesis Lucas scored 14 points but host Coppin State (5-18, 4-8 MEAC) lost, 67-57, to Norfolk State (10-14, 9-4). The Eagles had won two straight games. ... Randyll Butler made a free throw with eight seconds left as host Colgate (6-21, 5-11 Patriot) won, 54-53, over visiting Loyola Maryland (7-20, 5-11). Laurel cancels Saturday program after two races
Laurel Park canceled its live program after the second race Saturday because of severe weather. Racing was halted after the early daily double. Dr. Bolt won the first race and Wholly Hughes won the second, providing jockey Sheldon Russell with his 998th career victory. Laurel remained open for simulcast wagering. Live racing is scheduled to resume today with a 12:35 p.m. post time for the first race.
Varsity wrestling: Archbishop Spalding's Ryan Garretson (106 pounds) placed second at the Maryland Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament. Garretson qualified for the National Preps Tournament at Lehigh on Friday and Saturday.
Indoor track: Matt Centrowitz (Broadneck) finished 10th in the 1,500 meters at the Sainsbury Birmingham (England) Indoor Grand Prix in 3 minutes, 40.80 seconds. Vincent Kibet of Kenya won in 3:34.91.
