The Chesapeake Bayhawks acquired defenseman Kyle Sweeney from the Boston Cannons on Friday for a third-round pick in the 2016 college draft. The Bayhawks had received that draft pick Wednesday from the New York Lizards in a trade for defenseman Brian Spallina. Sweeney, 33, is an 11-year veteran of Major League Lacrosse, having made his debut in 2004 with the Philadelphia Barrage. He helped the Barrage win two championships before being traded to Boston in 2010. The former Georgetown All-American won an additional Steinfeld Trophy with the Cannons in 2011. Sweeney has 423 ground balls, eighth in MLL history and third among defenseman; he also has 42 goals and 27 assists.
College men: With the game tied at 3 after the first quarter, No. 11 Cornell (1-1) used an 8-2 run in the second quarter to break away and won, 16-8, over Hobart (1-1). The game was moved to the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex because of weather concerns. Matt Donovan had five goals for the Big Red, and Alex Love led the Statesmen with four. Cornell bounced back from a 14-6 loss to then-No. 4 Syracuse on Sunday.
College women: Shannon Gilroy had five goals to power No. 4 host Florida (3-1) to a 17-7 decision over San Diego State (0-1). The win was the third straight for the Gators. Gilroy scored the first goal 1:19 into the game to start a 9-0 run.

Report: Brian Stewart might coach Neb. secondary
Former Maryland defensive coordinator Brian Stewart appears to be close to an agreement to join Nebraska's staff as the defensive backs coach, a source told the Omaha World-Herald. It was announced Thursday that Stewart and the Terps mutually decided to part ways after he'd spent three years with the program.
College baseball: Sophomore right hander Mike Shawaryn gave up just three hits over seven innings as No. 13 Maryland defeated South Alabama, 8-0, on Friday night in Mobile, Ala. Junior LaMonte Wade (St. Paul's) was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Junior Kevin Martir added three hits, and freshman Andrew Bechtold drove in two runs. The win gives Maryland its first 4-0 start since 1987. The Terps are 19-4 in their past 23 games dating to last season.
Women's college soccer: Kevin Dempsey, who has spent the past five seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU after spending nine years as head coach at the College of Charleston, was named an assistant coach at Maryland. Raised in Columbia, Dempsey was an All-Metro midfielder at Centennial who helped the Eagles to state championships in 1984 and 1985, scoring 13 goals during his senior year. He played at Catonsville Community College, where he was captain and all-region in 1987, before moving to UMBC, where he played in 1988.
Men's college basketball: Bowie State senior forward Cameron Knox (W.E.B. DuBois) was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year. Knox leads the conference in scoring and is in the top five in field goals, 3-pointers and steals. Bulldogs guard Ahmaad Wilson (Randallstown, Owings Mills) made the All-Rookie team. ... Maryland freshman guard Melo Trimble, who is averaging 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists, is one of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. The award, in its 12th year, is named after the former Holy Cross and Boston Celtics star. The Terps' Greivis Vasquez won it in 2010.
Women's college basketball: Bowie State senior forward Donia Naylor and junior guard Ty-Nita Baker were named to the All-CIAA team. Lincoln forward-guard Teira Pendleton (Poly) and Bowie State guard Kyah Proctor made the rookie team.
College softball: Maryland (7-5) split its first two games of the Mary Nutter Classic on Thursday night in Cathedral City, Calif. The Terps dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 8-6, to No. 24 Notre Dame, then beat Brigham Young, 2-1, in walk-off fashion in nine innings. Lindsey Schmeiser and Mandy Gardner combined for four hits and seven RBIs during the two games.
NASCAR: Justin Boston of Sparks finished 29th in the Camping World Truck NextEra Energy Resources 250 in Daytona Beach, Fla. He left after an accident 18 laps into the 100-lap race.
