National lacrosse roundup (May 6): Hartford men upset No. 4 Albany in America East semifinal

Justin Huggins scored his game-high fifth goal in overtime as the Hartford men's lacrosse team upset No. 4 Albany, 11-10, in an America East semifinal Thursday night.

Both league semifinals were upsets as Vermont topped No. 15 Stony Brook, 10-9.

Hartford's Dylan Protesto won 20 of 23 faceoffs, including the last one to set up the game-winning play with 3:36 left in overtime.

The Hawks (10-6) had the ball with 8.6seconds left in regulation but failed to get a shot off. Hartford will face Vermont in Saturday's championship.

The Great Danes fell to 12-3.

Vermont 10, No. 15 Stony Brook 9: Cam Milligan scored the game-winner with 3:26 left as the Catamounts (9-7) upset the host Seawolves (12-4) in an America East semifinal.

Vermont used a 3-1 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game twice before scoring the go-ahead goal.

No. 1 Denver 17, Providence 8: Zach Miller had a natural hat trick and the host Pioneers (13-1) beat the Friars (7-9) in a Big East semifinal.

Denver faces Marquette in Saturday's championship game.

No. 19 Marquette 14, No. 16 Villanova 9: Ryan McNamara had four goals to lead the Golden Eagles (10-4) past the Wildcats (9-5) in a Big East semifinal at Denver.

Devin McNamara (Loyola Blakefield) had a hat trick for Villanova.

Hobart 7, No. 20 Bryant 6: The Statesmen (9-6) upset the host Bulldogs (10-5) in a Northeast Conference semifinal to advance to Saturday's championship against Saint Joseph's, a 14-7 winner over Robert Morris.

No. 12 Air Force 10, Bellarmine 8: Chris Walsch (Gilman) had a hat trick to lead the Falcons (14-2) past the Knights (6-9) in a Southern Conference semifinal in Richmond, Va.

Air Force faces host Richmond, a 17-6 winner over High Point, on Saturday.

Women

No. 2 Florida 11, Georgetown 8: Sammi Burgess (McDonogh) scored three goals and the top-seeded Gators (17-1) closed the game on a 4-0 run to earn a victory over the host Hoyas (6-11) in a Big East quarterfinal.

Taylor Gebhardt had a game-high four goals for No. 4 seed Georgetown, which used a 6-0 run spanning the first and second halves to take a 7-5 lead with 26:33 remaining. Burgess ended the streak 15 seconds later with a goal to cut the deficit to one as Florida scored six of the game's final seven goals to seal the win.

The Gators will face the winner of Temple at 2:30 p.m.

Temple 12, Connecticut 8: Kirstie Connor (North Carroll) scored five goals to lead the Owls (13-5) past the Huskies (12-5) in a Big East quarterfinal at Georgetown.

Rutgers 11, No. 17 Ohio State 10, 2OT: Amanda Turturro completed her hat trick by scoring the winner with 2:05 left in the second overtime as the No. 4 seed Scarlet Knights (6-11) upset the No. 5 seed Buckeyes (11-6) in a Big Ten quarterfinal at Northwestern.

Rutgers will face No. 1 seed Maryland in the semifinals tonight at 6:30.

Neither team led by more than two goals. Trailing 10-8 with four minutes left in regulation, Ohio State scored two goals to force overtime. Rutgers' Kristina Dunphey and Molly Wood had a hat trick for the Buckeyes.

No. 15 Northwestern 20, Michigan 5: Selena Lasota and Kaleigh Craig each had a hat trick to help the host No. 3 seed Wildcats (9-8) rout the No. 6 seed Wolverines (6-12) in a Big Ten quarterfinal.

Northwestern finished with a 31-16 advantage in shots and led 13-3 at halftime. Twelve players scored for the Wildcats, who will face No. 2 seed Penn State tonight at 9.

Kim Coughlan and Bianca Brueckner each scored twice for Michigan.
