College lacrosse roundup: Duke men defeat No. 1 Irish

Case Matheis had a career-high four goals to help lead No. 6 Duke to a 13-8 upset of No. 1 Notre Dame on Friday in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's lacrosse semifinal at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

The Blue Devils (11-4) went on a 10-2 run over the second and third quarters. Goalie Danny Fowler made 12 saves and Duke held Notre Dame (9-2) scoreless for periods of 21:02 and 22:43.


No. 4 Syracuse 9, No. 2 North Carolina 8: Kevin Rice scored the game-winner with 1:48 left as the Orange (10-2) upset the Tar Heels (12-3) in an ACC semifinal in Chester.

No. 19 Stony Brook 9, Hartford 8, OT: Frank Robinson scored the game-winner with 1:10 left in overtime to lift the Seawolves (12-4, 5-1 American East) over the host Hawks (7-7, 3-2).

State women

Central Connecticut State 9, Mount St. Mary's 8: Erin Seipp (Notre Dame Prep) had four goals but the Mount (5-10, 4-2) fell to the host Blue Devils (5-10, 2-4).

Loyola Maryland 14, Boston University 7: Kara Burke (Dulaney) had a game-high five goals to power the host Greyhounds (13-4) past the Terriers (8-9) in a Patriot League semifinal.

Navy 16, Colgate 7: Led by Loren Generi and Katie Gallagher (C.Milton Wright) with three goals each, the Mids (14-4), took a 9-2 lead in the first half and cruised past the Raiders (10-6) in a Patriot League semifinal at Loyola.

Nation women

No. 2 North Carolina 18, No.14 Notre Dame 4: Aly Messinger scored a career-high six goals to power the second-seeded Tar Heels (15-2) past the Fighting Irish (10-8) in an ACC semifinal at Virginia.

North Carolina will face No. 7 Syracuse in Sunday's championship at 1 p.m.

No. 7 Syracuse 14, No. 4 Duke 10: Riley Donahue scored three goals in the second half to lead the Orange (13-6) past the Blue Devils (14-3) in an ACC semifinal at Virginia.
