Hat tricks by Chad Tutton, Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey helped No. 4 North Carolina overcome a five-goal game by Deemer Class (Loyola Blakefield) and earn a 15-14 lacrosse victory over No. 6 Duke on Sunday before the largest crowd at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill in 32 years,
The Tar Heels (10-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed by four goals in the first half before rallying in the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead. The Blue Devils (7-3, 0-2) scored three times in the final 3:29 of the period to regain the lead, but Carolina went on a 5-1 scoring run early in the fourth and weathered a late Duke rally to beat the Blue Devils at Fetzer Field for the first time since 2003.
The attendance of 5,711 was the largest at Fetzer for a men's lacrosse game since 8,500 saw UNC beat Johns Hopkins, 14-13, in 1983 — the Blue Jays' first game in Chapel Hill.
