UMBC women's lacrosse suspends five players for rules violation

Five UMBC women's lacrosse players have been suspended from the team for violation of team rules.

Sophomore attacker Mackenzie Reese (John Carroll), senior midfielder Alyssa Semones (Westminster), sophomore midfielder-defender Amber Kovalick (South River), redshirt sophomore defender Meghan Milani (Glenelg) and junior midfielder-defender Brittany Marquess (Broadneck) were suspended, UMBC athletics spokesman Steve Levy said Sunday.

School officials declined to elaborate Saturday, issuing a statement that said: "The Athletic Director and other University leaders are following all applicable policies and practices as we work to fully understand the situation and support our student athletes."

A call to co-coach Tony Giro was not immediately returned Saturday night.

The Retrievers are 5-3 this season after beating Manhattan, 12-11, on Saturday.
