Why Jets, Matt Rhule couldn't agree to terms as coaching candidate to stay at Baylor

He won’t be ruling the Jets.

Matt Rhule, the sought-after NFL head coaching candidate, will be staying put with Baylor, as the Jets hired Adam Gase instead, sources confirmed to The News on Wednesday.

NFL.com was the first to report that Rhule sent a text message to his college staff indicating his decision to remain at the collegiate level.

The News’ Manish Mehta reported the sticking point between Gang Green brass and the New York native.

“The Jets wanted Matt Rhule to hire assistants that they preferred rather than allow Rhule to hire his full staff, I’m told,” Mehta tweeted. “So, it’s understandable why Rhule didn’t agree to that arrangement.”

Mehta added: “My understanding is that Matt Rhule told the that he would not agree to a staff that was put together by GM Mike Maccagnan and VP of Player Personnel Brian Heimerdinger. Again, it is hard to fault Rhule for taking that position.

“Jets were not satisfied with Matt Rhule’s choice to be the OC to develop Sam Darnold. I understand Rhule’s hesitation. I also understand the Jets’ hesitation knowing who Rhule’s choice was (currently an NFL assistant coach).”
