State football roundup (Oct. 22): Stevenson blanks Delaware Valley, 19-0, en route to best start

Stevenson, ranked No. 14 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III poll and No. 15 in the D3football.com Top 25, took control of the Middle Atlantic Conference race with a 19-0 victory over Delaware Valley on Saturday at Mustang Stadium.

Mustangs quarterback Dan Williams completed 13 of 22 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Stevenson (7-0, 6-0 MAC) is off to its best start, surpassing the 6-0 record it had in the previous two seasons. The Mustangs have won nine straight dating to last season and posted their second shutout of the season and fourth in program history.

The Aggies (5-2, 4-2) were shut out for the first time since a 54-0 loss to Lycoming in 2002.

Delaware Valley, ranked No. 25 by D3football.com, entered the game averaging 39.3 points per game, second in the league behind Stevenson. The win Saturday was the Mustangs' first over the Aggies in six meetings.

Stevenson sits alone atop the MAC, with Albright and Widener a game behind.

The Mustangs can secure the conference championship and the accompanying NCAA berth with two wins in their final three games.

Frostburg State 17, Christopher Newport 6: The host Bobcats (6-1, 5-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference) won their fifth straight game by beating the Captains (5-2, 4-2).

Connor Cox (South River) rushed for a touchdown and threw for one. Christopher Newport was scoreless until the fourth quarter.

McDaniel 14, Dickinson 7: Breon Herbert caught a 58-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie and lift the host Green Terror (2-5, 2-4 Centennial Conference) over the Red Devils (0-7, 0-6).

Claude Richardson led McDaniel's defense with 10 tackles, including three for loss.

Salisbury 36, Kean 14: The host Sea Gulls (6-1, 5-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference) scored 16 straight points in the first half and beat the Cougars (3-4, 2-4).

Salisbury got rushing touchdowns by Ryan Kolbe, Connor Canonico, Brady Curley (Howard) and Brandon Lewis (John Carroll). The Sea Gulls had 481 yards of total offense to 275 for Kean.

Virginia Union 42, Bowie State 35: The host Panthers (5-3, 4-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) overcame a 21-0 first-quarter deficit to beat the Northern Division-leading Bulldogs (5-3, 4-1).

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Bowie State.
