State college football roundup: Victor has 2 TDs in Towson's 56-20 loss to South Florida

Senior running back Darius Victor ran for two touchdowns but visiting Towson fell, 56-20, to South Florida on Saturday night.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Morgan Mahalak threw for 165 yards in his debut for the Tigers (0-1).

Mahalak, who spent two years at Oregon before transferring to Towson, completed a 56-yard pass to Christian Summers to set up the first of two touchdown runs by Victor, who finished with 70 yards on 23 carries and became the fourth Tiger to eclipse the 3,000-yard mark on an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Years from now, Maryland football fans hope to look back to Saturday’s season opener against Howard as the start of the program’s turnaround under DJ Durkin.

Redshirt freshman Shane Simpson had 229 yards on eight kickoff returns to set a single-game record for the program.

Quinton Flowers threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on runs of 5 and 7 yards for the Bulls (1-0). Two-time AAC rushing champion Marlon Mack ran for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Catholic 28, McDaniel 21, OT: The Cardinals rallied to defeat the visiting Green Terror in overtime in the season opener for both teams in Washington.

McDaniel (0-1) led 21-6 before Catholic (1-0) scored twice over the final 8:43 of regulation to tie.

Ray Doh led the Green Terror on defense with seven tackles, including two for loss, and two pass breakups. John Chamberlin had 15 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Jorge Pola completed 23 of 43 passes for 246 yards for the Cardinals.

Seton Hill 50, Bowie State 48: A 37-yard touchdown pass from Christian Strong to Norman Darden completed a second-half comeback as the Griffins (1-0) overtook the host Bulldogs (0-1).

Bowie State led 34-28 at halftime. Seton Hill went ahead with 9:42 left in the game.

Frostburg State 31, Geneva 10: Connor Cox (South River) completed 23 of 31 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Bobcats (1-0) past the Golden Tornadoes (0-1).
