Digest: Cary ties Hopkins TD record in 45-29 victory over Washington & Lee

Johns Hopkins junior running back Ryan Cary rushed for 158 yards on 20 carries and tied the school record for touchdowns in a game with four as the Blue Jays, ranked No. 15 in Division III, earned a 45-29 win over Washington & Lee, ranked 20th in Division III, on Thursday night at Homewood Field in the season opener for both teams.

Cary, who had three touchdowns in 12 games in 2015, rushed for three touchdowns and caught three passes for 69 yards and an additional score for the 13th four-touchdown performance in program history.

Jays senior quarterback Jonathan Germano completed 17 of 26 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions and had eight carries for 52 yards as Hopkins finished with 500 yards of total offense.

Johns Hopkins has seen one play be the difference between advancing another step in the NCAA Division III football playoffs and heartbreak in each of the past three seasons.

Senior defensive back Dan Johnson (Westminster) had a team-high 14 tackles for a Jays defense that held the Generals to 60 passing yards but allowed 358 on the ground. With the win, Hopkins extended its regular-season winning streak to 32 games.

Hopkins travels to Selinsgrove, Pa., on Sept. 10 to face Susquehanna at 1 p.m.

Women's college soccer: Tonight's women's game between Loyola Maryland and visiting Cornell will be the first college soccer match ever broadcast live on Twitter. The stream will begin at 6 p.m. at twitter.com/i/live/770724813216153600. Twitter and Patriot League broadcast partner Campus Insiders announced in July that more than 300 live college events will be streamed from the Patriot League, Mountain West Conference and West Coast Conference. Campus Insiders is also a part of the first college football game to be broadcast on Twitter: Thursday night's opener between Utah State and Weber State. Over the past two months, Twitter has announced partnerships to stream live broadcasts of NFL, Major League Baseball and NHL games.

United Women's Lacrosse League: Baltimore Ride attackers Alex Aust (Maryland) and Dana Dobbie (Maryland); midfielders Kristen Carr (Mercy) and Maddy Lesher (Loyola Maryland); defenders Taylor Cummings (Maryland, McDonogh), Beth Glaros (Maryland, Wilde Lake) and Katie Schwarzmann (Maryland, Century); and goaltender Kerry Stoothoff (Loyola Maryland) were named All-Stars on Wednesday. Other locals named to the team include Long Island Sound midfielder Alice Mercer (Maryland, Century) and defenders Hillary Fratzke (Towson), Kelly McPartland (Maryland) and Taryn VanThof (Loyola Maryland) and Boston Storm defender Erin Slifer (South Carroll).

Men's college lacrosse: Chris Perzinski (Hereford) was named coach at Elizabethtown (Pa.). … Brown coach Mike Daly named three of his ex-Tufts players as assistants: Brett Holm, Matt Callahan and Chris Schoenhut.
