The Towson football team’s season finale at Rhode Island on Saturday could be particularly meaningful for the senior class.
The Tigers' 13 seniors are one victory shy of their 34th, which would tie the school record for most wins in a four-year span.
“If we find a way to win this game, these guys will have tied the record for most wins in a four-year span in the history of the school,” Towson coach Rob Ambrose said. “There’s going to be a tremendous amount of gratitude for these guys, because there’s a lot of guys in that class that didn’t make it through their four or five years of college here and went somewhere else.
"These are the guys that stuck it out, and while they might have [experienced] some lows in their career, they certainly had some of their greatest highs, and I expect them to be some of the greatest representatives of this program in the future.”
The last game of the season – and their careers – is especially poignant for the seniors.
“For the old guys, you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel," Ambrose said. "I remember my last play as a football player in college, and you want your last game to be one of the most successful possible.”
The same is true for Rhode Island's seniors, who will be honored on Saturday. Rams coach Jim Fleming said both teams are playing for the same reasons.
“Finish on a high note and go ahead and start building toward 2015,” he said. “We’ve got a Senior Day here, so there’s obviously some significance there, trying to send our seniors out a winner. It’s a big opportunity for us. ...
"It’s going to be an interesting matchup, and I think there is definitely significance to the game for both programs. You’d like to finish up on a high note and have a good taste in your mouth.”
